Why Mission Statements Matter - Your Career Intel

Why Mission Statements Matter - Your Career IntelDo you know your companys mission statement? Does your company even have a mission statement? Many people think of company mission statements as fluffy pieces of corporate jargon. But in reality, a mission statement is an incredibly powerful strategic tool for activating your employees.Ill admit that I wasnt fully aware of the power of mission statements until I attended a training session on the topic recently. During the session, teams were asked to create their own personal mission statements, starting with choosing five values that were most important to them. I thought this would be an exercise that employees would trudge through, but elendhing could have been further from the truth. I watched as people were completely engaged with the activity, and later I heard feedback from managers that the activity had led to a noticeable improvement in morale and performance, even weeks later. What is it about mission statements that help to bring out the best in employees? Research shows that there are three key areas where mission statements really help to transform the employee experience and ultimately drive productivityClarity in organizational values helps employees prioritize betterAnyone whos worked at a large company is probably familiar with the feeling of being instructed to achieve a set of objectives that are competing and maybe even conflicting. Different leaders and divisions have different priorities, and employees often find themselves caught in the middle, unsure whose goals to prioritize. When the entire organization is aligned to a clear set of written objectives that are visible to everyone, employees are better equipped to make the right decisions about how to allocate their time and effort. Managers are better able to set lower level objectives that support the overall goals of the company. Even the rank and file employees, when faced with a long list of to dos, will be able to choose which are mos t important based on the degree to which they support the mission.Perhaps most importantly, a clearly articulated mission statement helps employees to know what not to do. All potential activities can be evaluated based on whether they do or do not support the mission, and employees can avoid wasting time on initiatives that dont.Mission statements help employees find meaning in their workA good mission statement shows employees how their work will improve the lives of their customers, their community and perhaps even the world. Take for example Patagonias oft-cited mission statementBuild the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis. When employees understand how their work contributes toward a larger goal, they find meaning in their work. And when employees find their work to be meaningful, they feel a sense of ownership over their work. This sense of ownership leads to stronger commitment to the work, and g reater engagement, and increased creativity when tackling challenges. All of behauptung lead to improved productivity.A strong mission statement helps employees to become ambassadorsOne of the most important aspects of a great mission statement is that it defines why your company exists and what makes it different than every other competitor. When your companys raison dtre is clear, every employee can clearly articulate to business partners and customers why your company is the best. Theyll be more passionate about your company, and theyll be able to become your most effective brand ambassadors. If your company has yet to draft a mission statement, theres no time like the present to do some organizational soulmusik searching and decide what you stand for. Your employees will thank you

How to Be a More Inclusive Leader, According to This Olympic Gold Medalist

How to Be a More Inclusive Leader, According to This Olympic Gold Medalist The business case for inclusion is common sense, if not common practice, said Cognizant Chief Financial Officer Karen McLoughlin during the opening remarks of Its Time Inclusions Role in Tech, a conference Cognizant hosted in New York City. Its Time, which focused on inclusive technology, gathered more than100 thought leaders on technology and the tech workforce. It started with a goal to empower attendees to discuss the importance of diversity in tech development. But it ended with a much broader message inclusivity isnt just important, its the way of the future. And we all need to be prepared to realize our biases, then work to overcome them.Keynote speaker Bonnie St. John Leadership Consultant, Olympic Medalist, Rhodes Scholar, and Author spoke on cracking the code on inclusion. Its like were living in the enlightenment, she said, lamenting that one day people will look back and wonder how we didnt get it s ooner. Diversity makes us more competitive.St. John exemplifies the power of diversity. She was the first African American ever to win medals in the Winter Paralympic competition as a ski racer. She said the U.S. ski gruppe wasnt recruiting one-legged black girls from San Diego, but her friend Barbara, who first brought her to a ski slope, knew that she would be a stand-out at the sport.Reaching across aisles and believing in people who dont look like you, St. John said, is the power of inclusive thinking. And without Barbaras inclusivity, America would have less gold medals.I realized that without me, we wouldve won less gold medals... It wasnt Americans behind me on that slope. She shared a few ways all leaders can be more inclusive, starting with recognizing their unconscious biases. You have to own it in order to change it, she said, using the curtain large orchestras place between judges and candidates for auditions as an example of forward thinking to combat biases.St. John also provided a more practical example of forward thinking. She said one white male executive she knew platzset a goal of speaking to people who didnt look like him at meetings and events he attended. He realized after a period of this outreach that he was no longer approached by the same group of people. Instead, a more diverse set of professionals felt comfortable approaching him to give their opinions. He asked Did word get out that Im cooler? St. John laughed. She said this small change made him visibly more inclusive, and underrepresented people had noticed. We can all reach out to people different from us, she said. And inclusive leaders reach out and involve quiet people. She said diversity in temperament is also important, as you never know why someone is quiet. Someone may be suffering from a hidden chronic illness, or come from a community that conditions women to be passive, especially to superiors.St. John provided several tips for reaching out to team introverts, including sen ding information along for pre-processing or asking people after the meeting why they were quiet and what you can do to help.Ultimately, she said her berater and ski coach, Warren Witherell, said you do not create individual champions, because you can only push one person so far. Instead, you must create a community of champions who empower each other.Beyond hosting Its Time, Cognizant has taken many steps to create an inclusive community of tech champions. The company has opened training centers dedicated to upskilling or reskilling people who may not otherwise have the opportunity to receive technological educations. Its a business necessity, said Eric Westphal, Senior Director of Global Corporate Affairs at Cognizant. They provide the diverse talent we need. The company has also sponsored education centers for children who may not otherwise be exposed to STEM like the Lower Eastside Girls Club to aid in giving all communities the option to build the technology of the future.

How to stop a reply-allpocalypse from spiraling out of control

How to stop a reply-allpocalypse from spiraling out of controlHow to stop a reply-allpocalypse from spiraling out of controlWeve all seen it. Our inbox count rising by the second. The ignored please do not Reply All request. The question why am I getting this? that repeats again and again in a matter of minutes. You welcheste time fighting to delete the avalanche of e-mails.The Reply-All-Ocaplyse has begun. If youve started the thread - usually by accident - then you are a helpless spectator. If youre a recipient, youre probably annoyed and stopped reading the responses. And who can forget the horror stories? One banks 250,000 employees spent hours in vain responding to a thread that sent Blackberrys buzzing for days. One reply-all chain tied up 1.2 million employees of the UKs National Health Service. Time Inc. was rendered helpless last year by an hours-long chain. 450 journalists (including our editor) tested their wits against each other for hours- while others prayed for escape - on an schmelzglas thread related to controversial pharmaceuticals CEO Martin Shkreli. There was a marketing assistant who was waiting for a large order of T-shirts for a convention with the company logo that everyone was to wear at the event, reminisces career coach Jane Jackson. The assistant had been hassled by a number of people about when they would arrive and when the box of shirts finally arrived he sent an e-mail to everyone stating in capital letters, IVE GOT THE SHIRTSUnfortunately the assistant forgot the R.But this misery isnt inevitable. This electronic scourge can be stopped.Heres how.Dont enable Reply AllYou can create an e-mail thread without the ability to REPLY ALL, nipping this professional annoyance in the bud.For Microsoft Outlook users, you can remove the vorkaufsrecht from the toolbar, preventing the headache before it may ever begin. William Zhou lays out the steps on the Microsoft Office TechCenter site.Another option for Outlook users is the TuneReplyAll - yeah, thats the real site - add on for Outlook. This triggers a confirmation window that asks if you are sure you want to Reply All to this e-mail.Gmail users in most cases are by default set only to reply to a single individual. But company admins can ensure this is the case for business e-mail accounts by adjusting the default reply behavior, in the settings menu. You can always play it safe by crafting the e-mail and addressing the recipients in the BCC field. This prevents your eager e-mail readers who lack impulse control from replying back to everyone.Mute the email threadIf you are on the receiving end of the REPLY ALL message torrent, simply muting your Gmail thread will prevent the notification alerts. For Outlook users, there is an ignore feature under the home tab.Delete your repliesOn the other hand weve all experienced the sinking dread after weve sarcastically replied to an e-mail and realized you may have accidentally hit REPLY ALL. Some of us have dodged that bullet, breathing a sigh of relief. Others, unfortunately, have not- and, depending on the content, could be in serious professional jeopardy. If you use Gmail or Outlook I urge you to set up the delayed e-mail function. This makes it easy to undo an e-mail up to 30 seconds after you click send. This is usually the window when you notice an egregious spelling error or that you absent-mindedly forgot to attach a file - or hit REPLY ALL with an inappropriate .gif response.Apologize if all other options have been exhaustedOf course, its better to think before you furiously type and click. But if the message has gone and you are not able to recall it, then its time to eat humble pie, Jacksontells Ladders. If youre ever in this situation, dont panic.Contact each recipient individually, explain what happened and apologize profusely. Dont do this via e-mail. Pick up the phone to call them and apologize personally, Jackson says. The dicke bretter bohren mssen with e-mails is that tone of voice can not be conveyed. You could say that your response was sent in haste and didnt reflect what you really meant to express.

Future Technical Support Trends

Future Technical Support TrendsFuture Technical Support TrendsFor several years now, industry futurists have been predicting the death of technical stab und sttze as we know it. However, recent research by HDI shows that, to paraphrase author Mark Twain, reports of supports death have been grossly exaggerated.According to the 2015 HDI Support Center Practices Salary Report, demand for support- gauged by the number of tickets (cases) handled- is up in nearly two-thirds of support centers. This is the continuation of a trend weve seen for at least seven years Each year, the number of tickets goes up. Some have speculated that this is due to the increase in automation, but only 16 percent of the tickets were generated without human intervention.Hiring in the industry is healthy, with 28 percent of organizations (companies, universities, hospitals, etc.) creating and filling new positions, and another 51 percent filling positions as they become open. Only four percent of organizations a re cutting staff.Sought-after technical support skillsThe top five skills support centers want areCustomer service skillsCommunication skillsAbility to learn quicklyTroubleshooting and problem-solving skillsAbility to work under pressureFrontline support analysts must be able to listen to and empathize with customers who have suffered an interruption or need a service as fast as possible they must also be able to speak and write clearly, learn on-the-fly, solve problems, and do it all quickly, under pressure, in accordance with rules and guidance, and in conjunction with their teammates.Customer service skills are more important now across the board- in parte because consumer expectations are higher. Thanks to Google, Apple, and other companies that have mastered the user interface, customers- internal and external alike- think like consumers and expect simplicity, immediacy and ease of use. Internal support is no exception, because there is now competition where none existed before . Cloud technologies have made shadow IT (applications and services installed and used without the knowledge or approval of IT) more widespread, and the ability to put a cloud application or system to use immediately by entering a credit card number changes the role and mandate of service and support.Staff satisfactionAlfruchtwein two-thirds of those who work in technical support centers say theyre satisfied with their work, and an additional 15-20 percent say theyre very satisfied.Among the factors contributing to a satisfied staff, relationships within the team was the most selected (72 percent), and management was the second most selected (65 percent). Compensation scored far lower, at 52 percent, and barely ahead of organizational culture (51 percent). In previous research performed jointly with Robert Half Technology, we found that the most important elements of an organizations culture- from a staff perspective- included opportunities to learn, access to training and developmen t, work/life balance, attainable performance goals, and opportunities for advancement. If you want to work in the field of technical support, you should concentrate not only on understanding the technical side, but on customer service and communication skills. If you do get to work in this field, chances are youll be a satisfied employee with a busy and challenging career ahead. In a forthcoming Focus Paper, HDI Senior Writer/Analyst Roy Atkinson discusses results of recent research as it relates to the people in support. This post highlights a few of the topics in the paper.Roy Atkinson is HDIs senior writer/analyst, acting as in-house subject matter expert and chief writer for blogs, articles and white papers and is a member of the HDI International Certification Standards Committee. How to Reapply for a Job When You Have Been Rejected

How to Reapply for a Job When You Have Been RejectedHow to Reapply for a Job When You Have Been RejectedShould you reapply for a job if you were rejected the first time around and you see that the position is still posted or has been relisted? It depends, but in general, the worst that can happen is that you get rejected again. Best-case scenario, you may have a better chance of getting accepted the second time around. When to Reapply After Being Rejected Applicants often wonder if it is advisable to reapply for a job which they have already applied for in the past. The short answer is that if you find the position to be very attractive, there is usually nothing to lose other than your time. Your chances of receiving serious consideration the second time around will be greater if considerable time has passed and/or if you have enhanced your credentials in some way. Typically, it doesnt make sense to reapply until at least four months have passed since your initial application. If you made the interview stage previously and were a finalist or received positive feedback, then you may be a strong enough candidate to receive an offer this time since there might be a less competitive pool. Another reason to consider reapplying if time has passed is that the staff responsible for screening resumes may have changed, and the new screener(s) may have a different take on the viability of your credentials. You never know whats going on behind the scenes. The applicant pool may have changed since you first applied. The employer might have refined their profile for the perfect candidate. For a variety of reasons, you may have a better chance of getting selected this time. Its also possible that you dont even know for sure that you were rejected, just that you werent selected. Many employers dont bother sending rejection letters. In that case, dont assume that your application was actively rejected. Its possible that your resume and deckblatt letter failed to make it thr ough the applicant tracking system. In that case, the problem isnt with your candidature, but rather with your application materials an easier fix than acquiring a new certification or adding years of experience. Target Your Resume and Letters fruchtwein large, and many smaller, employers use applicant tracking systems) (ATS) to screen applicants. These software programs manage the recruiting process automatically, receiving and sorting resumes and helping hiring managers and HR representatives search them. The advantage from the employers perspective is clear an ATS saves time that they would otherwise have to invest in having humans comb through piles of resumes. However, it can be a real problem for a job seeker, if they dont know how to write their resumes for both humans and robots. If you keep applying to jobs online, and never hear anything from a real, live person, you might be getting caught in the ATS net. It can happen even if youre fully qualified. It all comes down to using the right resume keywords. Keywords describe the requirements for a particular job, including skills, certifications, educational qualifications, and other qualities that a hiring manager is targeting. Take the time to target your resume and your cover letter, including keywords that match the job posting, and you will have a better chance of getting your application considered for the job. Dont be afraid to mention skills that seem obvious to you for example, if the job listing specifies that the candidate should be familiar with Microsoft Office, you should include that, or risk getting filtered out of contention. Also, be sure to highlight in your cover letter any additional experiences, awards, accomplishments, or training which you have amassed since your last application. What to Write in Your Cover Letter Typically, you would refer to your prior application in your cover letter if you have previously interviewed for the position. You can mention why you were co nvinced that the employer and the job were an excellent fit as a result of that exposure and that you would appreciate the employers consideration for the position. If you didnt receive a rejection letter or werent interviewed and considerable time has passed, you dont need to reference your previous application in your letter.
